If You Like … movie magic, make up, and costuming

Today’s If You Like post is about SyFy’s TV show “Face Off.”  My boy creature and I started watching the show three years ago, when it first came out, and amazingly, we’re still watching it!  I don’t usually like reality TV shows- I find there tends to be too much fake drama, but Face Off doesn’t have fake drama so much as the usual amount of turmoil which results from healthy competition.  Contestants often even help one another if there are unexpected ‘disasters,’ which is a very nice thing to see.

The show is about makeup artists competing for a variety of prizes, contracts, speaking engagements, and opportunities to further their careers.  The format is fairly standard there are two competitions each episode, one mini ‘foundation challenge,’ which awards the winner immunity from being eliminated that week, and one more substantial challenge called a ‘spotlight challenge’ which takes place over two or three days, ending in the elimination of one contestant.  Now you may be wondering what is so interesting about make up that this show could hold someone’s interest for so long, and I’ll tell you- this is not your usual make up.  This is the make up used in movies, usually science fiction, horror, or children’s movies.  This is theatrical make up, and things that are used as the basis for computer graphics.  There is an emphasis on techniques being used, and the effects and trick which can be used to make these concepts come to life in front of you.
